A Sure-Fire Way to Pick a Winner

On the ball ... Paul

On the ball … Paul

In the Tour de France stage four was today, no rain, no crashes and no lead changes; Lance remains in 18th place, 2:30 back.  In South Africa Germany was chosen to hand a ticket into the final and championship match to Spain; the Spanish gladly accepted its first chance to compete for the cup; Spain won 1-0. Going into the championship Spain is favored over the Netherlands;  Spain are 8/15 favorites to win. Holland are 6/4.

But we don’t yet know who the octopus will pick and given his reported accuracy at picking winners, the only odds maker that counts is an octopus.  A German octopus, called Paul, has picked 6 consecutive winners in this year’s World Cup competition.  Given the choice between the flags of two competing countries, Paul climbs onto his pick to win the match – Paul is said to have picked 70 percent winners in 2008, a better record than most betting services can boast.  And even though Paul is German and had favored German in the past, before today’s match he had chosen Spain to defeat Germany and move on to play Holland.
We have to wait until Sunday to find out whether Spain or Holland will win its first World Cup, and no word yet from Germany when Paul will make his choice.
