It has been a long time since I have had a television and longer still since I can remember the screen going to a test pattern with “We are experiencing technical difficulties at the present time.  We will return to our regularly scheduled programing as soon as possible.”  It has been a long time, but I can still remember how frustrating the test pattern was and without any other channels all we could do was wait.

In all of the years since if I though about that message I thought the message was unique to television, but apparently it is unique to new technology regardless of the broadcast medium.  With hours of going online the British Columbia lottery’s online casino gambling site went down.   The official website had the same explanation that television stations had 60 years ago – we are experiencing technical difficulties.  Later stories said the site was simply overwhelmed by traffic and was ill-equipped to handle the volume.

There is an old saying: The more things change, the more they stay the same.  Every time as a society we run off in some new direction it often feels as if are truly doing something new and original – only to find an error message that reminds us that little that we do is truly original, simply a new twist on an old thing; communication and gambling are as old as human society and at any time in our history when too many gamblers were shouting their bets at the same time the system crashed.
