“Mr. Putin, tear down that wall,” Mikhail Gorbachev

Well things did not get clearer or simpler in Russia after the election.  The Moscow Times is reporting much confusion; some observers and voters are saying as much as 25 percent of the votes were fabricated – the head of the Central Election Commission says the evidence of fabrication was fabricated.  Members of the Memorial human rights organization and the Golos election watchdog are reporting a 29 percent of the vote for United Russia in the 102 voting stations they have had time to recalculate, but there are 3000 voting stations in Moscow so it is far from clear what that means, or what percentage United Russia claimed for those same stations. But stay tuned, it is bound to get more interesting in the time leading up to the presidential election.

The Guardian is quoting Mikhail Gorbachev telling Putin and company to annul the election and hold a new election.  The Guardian is also reporting “tens of thousands” of protestors in Russia and “hundreds arrested.” No response from Vladimir Putin to Mr. Gorbachev; Putin was busy today registering his candidacy for the presidency. It is too bad that Ronald Regan is not alive for this, Gorbachev is now the voice of reason, democracy and open elections in Russia – no walls in his life now.  And in an ironic turn, the elected government that is heir to Gorbachev and his soviet state are now the guys building the walls.  I suspect that the leaders of United Russia are beginning to feel the same about Mr. Gorbachev and his post wall existence as leaders of both major American political parties feel when they are in power about Mr. Carter. “Oh, please, just shut up and leave the governing to us.”
